Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is an often debilitating mental condition that can produce a range of emotional symptoms. They include flashbacks, nightmares, depression and anxiety, dissociation and psychological numbing. Trauma results from many causes, profound tragedies, war, and severe physical or sexual abuse. Trauma affects a person’s concentration and ability to study. It can also severely impact work performance. Thus, the cost to the community is significant. If left untreated, it can severely affect the lives of the individual and their families. Project Recovery initially focused on adult survivors of sexual abuse, providing long-term individual and group treatment. The program has expanded treatment of PTSD to those who have suffered from physical abuse, domestic violence, war-time related traumas and first responders such as police and firefighters. Additionally, in all of these populations, there is the added problem of “secondary trauma” for millions of American families. Project Recovery now addresses the needs of the family members indirectly affected by such trauma. Research indicates that one of the single biggest obstacles to healthy attachment and good parenting is unresolved trauma. It is estimated that there are 60 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse in America today (Faulkner, 2006), and spouses and family members of survivors are often in need of counseling themselves. This pattern is also reflected in survivors of war-time trauma. As military families experience high levels of anxiety, fatigue and stress, there is an increased need for psychological counseling to help soldiers and their families after deployment. (Guthrie, 2005). “With so many combat soldiers returning from Iraq with serious psychological problems, millions of their loved ones are dealing with the repercussions.” (Schworm, 2006). William Welch, a writer for USA Today, cites a report by the Government Accountability Office that states, "the VA department does not have sufficient capacity to meet the needs of new combat veterans while still providing for veterans of past wars.'' (2005). Project Recovery works with men, women and adolescents, as well as their family members, with symptoms of posttraumatic stress. The program utilizes long-term psychotherapy and EMDR to process their experiences, build support systems, and establish positive coping skills. This leads to a productive work and home life and overall improved mental health.
