Samaritan Counseling Center is the largest nonprofit, interfaith counseling practice in the Capital Region.
It is a mental health safety net for people in our neighborhoods, schools, workplaces and congregations. In 2007, Samaritan’s professional therapists provided 12,000 sessions. This increased to 14,000 in 2008, and the number continues to grow.
Since 1985, the Center has offered professional, compassionate counseling services to people in varying financial circumstances. There are few other affordable places available for people to turn to with their mental health burdens.
The Center’s therapists are all certified and licensed professionals, representing the disciplines of clinical social work, clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy, and pastoral counseling.
Anxiety and depression…Family or marital crisis…Separation or loss…Emotional and behavioral issues of students…Domestic violence, physical or sexual abuse…War-time related trauma.

One of Samaritan’s most valuable programs is Project PASS (Partnerships
Assisting Student Success) an innovative, community-based, collaborative program that provides individual and family therapy to students who are at risk of academic failure due to emotional and behavioral issues. The long-term goal of the program is to lead students to graduation and help them become fully functioning adults within their community.
The Center relies on private philanthropy and foundation grants to provide counseling regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. Fifteen percent of our community’s families have no health insurance. Many have lost coverage because of job layoffs and the economic downturn. And too often many insurance plans do not cover the cost of long-term counseling services.
Because of these significant challenges, the Center’s board of directors and volunteers are actively engaged in obtaining ongoing philanthropic support. A Silent Samaritan program has been established to encourage people, foundations and businesses to directly support the Samaritan Counseling Center and its mission. Silent Samaritans are people of strength helping people in need.
Samaritan is fully accredited by the Samaritan Institute in Denver, Colorado, which assists and accredits Samaritan Centers in 230 cities across the United States. Our accreditation certificate is available here.
